BEST OF FIPRESCI
FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics, has been in existence for more than 70 years. The basic purpose of the organization, which now has members in over 60 countries all over the world, is to support cinema as an art form and as an outstanding and autonomous means of expression. The FIPRESCI Award story starts with the first Cannes Film festival in 1946 , where FIPRESCI elected new officials after World War II and at the same time formed for the first time an international jury. who awarded its prize ex aequo to David Lean's BRIEF ENCOUNTER and Georges Rouquier's FARREBIQUE. Since then, thanks to the prestige of our FIPRESCI Award, the number of FIPRESCI juries has constantly grown over the last six decades and today it is represented in over 60 international film festivals all over the world.

PHILIPPINE CINEMA
In the 16th edition of IFFK Philippines was selected in the Country Focus section. Seven films were screened in this section. Philippines, being one of Asia's earliest film industry, remains undisputed in terms of the highest level of theater admission in Southeast Asia. Over the years, however, the film industry has registered a steady decline in the movie viewership from 131 million in 1996 to 63 million in 2004. From a high of 200 films a year during the 1980s, the country's film industry was down to making a total of new 56 films in 2006 and around 30 in 2007. Although the industry has undergone turbulent times, the 21st century saw the rebirth of independent filmmaking through the use of digital technology, and a number of films have once again earned international recognition and prestige.

KAIDAN - HORROR CLASSICS
"Kaidan - Horror Classics" features ghost stories written by award winning modern Japanese writers Yasunari Kawabata, Osamu Dazai, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, & Saisei Muro. Japanese national broadcaster NHK asked four Japanese directors to adapt the short stories for TV. Hirokazu Koreeda (The Days After), Tsukamoto Shinya (The Whistler), Masayuki (The Arm) and Lee Sang-Il (The Nose) each direct one of the four stories. In The Whistler, a woman is jealous of her younger sister because of love letters she receives. The Nose is the story of a medieval monk who accidentally causes a boy's death. In The Arm, an aging man becomes obsessed by a beautiful young woman, asking if he can borrow one of her arms for a night. In The Days After, a man and a woman are visited by their dead son. But is it really him?.
