MRINAL SEN
Mrinal Sen along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, ranks among the most aclaimed filmmakers in the world of Bengali cinema. Starting five decade long career with "Raat Bhore" (1955), a film which Sen himself labeled as 'eminently forgettable' he has never ceased improving and experimenting. After his badly received debut, Mrinal Sen came out with "Under the Blue Sky" which earned him a name in the Bengali filmdom. His third attempt "Wedding Day" brought him to international glare and his rank as an accomplished director was further strengthened with "Bhuvan Shome", which is known as the harbinger of Indian New Cinema. A recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour given to an Indian filmmaker by the Government of India, Mrinal Sen has received many coveted international honours.

ARTURO RIPSTEIN
Arturo Ripstein once said "all art is painful. Pained by humanity". That must ne the reason why the films he makes are so painful. Because his films are work of art. Not all, obviously. Nobody can produce a masterpiece every time but he has made more than his fare share in his long and continuing career.

The most renowned and lauded Mexican director internationally, he remained an outsider at home. When he was asked once why he was "nobody's favourite director", he replied, "my films are noone's favourites and that's very comforting; I don't have to cater to and audience, I can do whatever I feel like doing, and so I can remain no one's favourite director"...................................... A K LOHITHADAS
Lohithadas broke the convetions of commercial cinema even though he has been a part of it for over two decades. His strength was the originality and power of his screenplays. As far as Malayalam film is considered this is not a trival thing. He made sure that he had a story to tell, that it had an intimate connection with life, and that all his stories had variety. He never had created any character to promote the image of an actor or actress. To transform themselves to these characters deeply rooted in life, these stars had to come down to the earth......................................N Sasidharan

MIKIO NARUSE
The son of a destitue embroider, Mikio Naruse was raised in the dire poverty. At 15, following his father's death, he was forced to enter the job market, accidentally finding employement as a prop man at the Shochiku Film Company. He toiled there for a decade, in variety low level, low paid positions, including assistant to several directors, before getting his first chance to direct in 1930.
Naruse's earlier films, many from his own screenplays, were typically a blend of slapstic and melodrama, trying to meet the demands set by Shochiku's Kamata Studio, who wanted a mixture of laughter and tears. Catharine Russell in her book "The cinema of Naruse Mikio" shows how his films contributed to Japanese modernity as a cultural movement and how his films illuminate female subjectivity throughout the Studio era. Akira Kurisawa called Naruse's style if melodrama, "like a great river with a calm surface and raging current in its depths".
